Reception for Student Photographers to Be Held Wednesday, May 5

A reception will be held Wednesday, May 5, for three WCU students whose photographs are currently on exhibit at the library. The students--Sarah Ruth Bonner, Jay Strong and Maegan Zigarevich--have a total of seventeen photographs on display for the portfolio show. The reception will be from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in the media center on the library’s main floor and is open to the public.

Bonner, who is from Asheville, is a senior B.F.A. major whose focus is graphic arts, photography, and sculpture. She is the recipient of an academic project grant from the Honors College and the winner of the 2010 Jonathan Williams Memorial Photography Award. Her exhibit, titled “The Inhabited Space,” features various interiors that reflect the lives of current or past inhabitants. “I am attracted to the silent story that is emitted from these sites,” she says.

A native of Greensboro, Strong is a senior studying professional writing and photography. His exhibit, “Urban Landscapes,” makes use of nighttime photography to depict the inclination of human beings to erect bright lights in natural settings.

“Rust” is the title of Zigarevich’s portfolio show. “These photographs are meant to show how rich and vibrant rust and other reclaimed materials can be,” she says. Rust shows how time and oxygen work together, revealing how eventually the environment will reclaim the objects that society has created.”

The students’ work will be on exhibit through June.
