Cherokee Traditions: From the Hands of our Elders, a new digital collection

Hunter Library’s digital collection, Cherokee Traditions: From the Hands of our Elders is now available from http://www.wcu.edu/library/DigitalCollections/CherokeeTraditions/

This digital resource documents a generation of craft makers whose work spanned the turn of the twentieth century. Included on the site are examples of basketry, pottery, wood and stone carving, and various textile traditions. The online images are primarily from the collections of Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian. Through projects such as this one, Hunter Library is assembling a series of historically significant digital collections and building community through its collaboration with regional partners.

Open Access Week : A Panel Discussion

The Coulter Faculty Commons and Hunter Library are pleased to announce that we will co-host a panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities of open-access publishing as a part of international Open Access Week.

As the Web site states, “Open Access” to information – the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and re-use those results as you need – has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted. It has direct and widespread implications for academia, medicine, science, industry, and for society as a whole.” How this potential might, or might not, play out at WCU is the topic of our discussion.

Please join us on Wednesday, October 26 at 11 a.m. in the UC Multipurpose Room as Associate Provost Mark Lord leads a lively discussion with representatives from across the academic colleges.

Hunter Library Offers Portable DVD Players

WCU students, faculty and staff can now check out portable DVD players for use in the library. The DVD players have 9 inch screens and weigh less than 3 pounds! This is a great way to screen films your instructor may have put on reserve for your class. The DVD players must stay in the library building and are to be used with headphones to avoid disturbing others. Come to the Circulation Desk to check one out!
